A nature reserve in the heart of Maidstone's town centre is getting a boost with the planting of 150 native trees and shrubs including Holly, alder buckthorn, Blackthorn, Hawthorn and Wild Privet.

Lib Dem councillors have been working over the Winter alongside local residents to plant new hedges, excavate a shallow pond, create woodpiles and open up rides and clearings to sunlight at the River Len Nature Reserve in the heart of Maidstone. High Street Ward councillor Denise Joy says " This is a very special and peaceful oasis with wonderful wildlife right in the heart of the town and much valued by residents."

Cllr Tony Harwood, the Cabinet member for the environment adds " All this work will help to maintain the diverse vegetation structure and rich wetland habitats which make this such a unique place. The existence of a nature reserve and the presence of beautiful wildlife at the very heart of Maidstone town centre is quite astonishing. Under Lib Dem leadership Maidstone Council plans to create a network of nature reserves across our Borough allowing all residents to maintain an all important relationship and understanding of the natural world."
