Sir Ming Campbell has announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Democrats with immediate effect.

The Party's Federal Executive has agreed a timetable to elect a new Leader which will involve an all members ballot. Nominations are now open and will close on October 31st. Ballot papers will be distributed towards the end of November and the result will be declared in the week beginning December 17th.

Vince Cable, the deputy leader has now taken over as Party Leader until the election has been completed.

The Lib Dems in Maidstone and the Weald have greeted the news of Ming Campbell's resignation with gratitude for his contribution as leader, and enthusiasm for the new start it offers the party.

Fran Wilson, said:

"Ming's decision is typical of the man, statesmanlike, selfless and dignified.

"The new leader will now have time to build on Ming's excellent work, and take the party on to the next general election."
